Deck Lighting – Brightening Up Your Most Used Outdoor Area
By Tony Pastore
Nothing can set off a deck like good lighting. Not only does it highlight the features of the deck but it also makes it safer for use after dark. Also keep in mind that incorrect lighting can also put the deck in a bad light, so to speak. Lighting that isn’t positioned correctly can make it hard to see, can shine in visitors eyes and can make shadowy areas on the deck.
There are different types of installation of deck lighting to choose from and the most common ones are recessed, post, and hanging deck lighting. All these types have different uses and work better than others for different types of decks.
Recessed lights is placed directly in the deck and is level with flooring of the deck and there are many different designs of recessed lighting to choose from. One thing to consider when choosing recessed lighting is that if a bulb should burn out or a light breaks accessing the fixture is sometimes difficult because the casing is under the surface of the deck.
Post lights can be fitted on a deck post either on the top or side of the post. These types of lights are much larger than recessed lighting and therefore will give off more light on the deck. It is also easier to repair or replace bulbs on post lighting as compared to recessed lighting.
Hanging lights are probably the easiest to install and can be installed at anytime, not just when building the deck. Also, if the design of a deck is changed the Hanging Light can also be changed to a different design. Changing out bulbs on Hanging Lighting is as simple as changing out a bulb in an indoor Ceiling Fixture.
All of these types of deck lighting offer multiple colors, diffusions and bulb choices. Bulb choices are typically one of the most important choices to make when determining lighting for a deck. Solar Powered lighting saves energy but does not give off large amounts of light and the light does not last as long as other options. Led Lighting typically has a longer bulb life than regular bulbs which can offset the more expensive purchase price of these bulbs. Both solar and LED lighting give off less light than standard lighting so if more light is needed or the deck is large additional fixtures may be needed in order to produce the proper amount of light for the deck.
Finally, when determining what type of deck lighting to install consider the other lighting that may be in the surrounding area, like walkway lighting. For a pleasant flow pattern it may be best to use the same type of bulb and possibly the same color for both the deck and the walkway. Of course, different wattage bulbs may be needed in different areas. Most bulbs come in different wattages so that the basic theme can be kept throughout the design and while still allowing for the different levels of deck lighting for ambiance or safety.
Deck lighting lights are a great choice for any home. Deck lighting lets you have a lit up deck at any time.
